In 1950, Malco Products, SBC was founded by Mark W. Keymer, a young steel supply salesman who decided to manufacture and market a pipe crimper he had invented for installing sheet metal ductwork in forced air heating systems. This marked the beginning of the company, which soon expanded its product line to include more tools such as the first hand seamer to employ compound leverage, a time-saving hand notcher, and a hand-operated snap lock punch. These tools were well received by contractor-installers, as they made metal duct fabrication easier to do at job sites.

As the demand for Malco's products grew, Keymer's manufacturing operations had to move from a garage to the more spacious basement of his Minneapolis home. The company's name, Malco, was derived from combining Mark and an early associate named Al's first names, representing "Mark and Al's Company."
